Life All Around

Logan Anderson's picture

I was on my way to one of my favorite camping spots. I sat down on a log to make lunch. Something overcame me; I became relaxed in an utmost way.

The sound of the forest was beautiful nothingness, but at the same time, it was everything. The calm wind rustling through the leaves and twigs seemed to be a musical performance by nature. The distant sound of the river flowed through the forest like a majestic snake. No sound overwhelmed another. Everything mixed in a way that made me think someone was directing the clean sounds. The sounds isolated me, although there was life all around me. It was astonishing, and mysterious.
The smells; wow the smells. I took a deep breath and all of the sudden could feel the life of the forest. The smell of all the different life around me was devastating. Everything was pure, distinct, unending, and completely varied. The many plants came together in their fragrance, making them seem like one. The smell of clean, running water was so pure. The many scents of animals: the dirtiness they lived in, the food they ate, and the weather they endured seemed present in their aromas. The smell brought the life of the forest to an intensity I cannot describe.
The sights which I saw just heightened my wonder of the things around me. Life was absolutely everywhere. I saw plants of vibrant green: they looked relaxed but they were actually working hard. The seeds flying in the air surrounding me were evidence of their profound effort. The honey bees flying from plant to plant, all with one common goal was admirable, to say the least. The animals were astonishing in all details of their body. Looking at them makes me think about their perfection. The right fur coat to endue whatever nature throws at them, the antlers for dominance and beauty, and everything else was perfect. Their body structure, it’s perfect and exquisitely done for the way the way they live, day by day. Also, the distant view of the mountain range amazed me. Every cliff, rock, and tree looked as if it was it was painting in a museum. With awe, I looked upon the flawlessness of the forest.
The forest was touching me in astonishing ways. I could feel the wind on my skin: cool, calm, and very much alive. The wind was also brought other things I could feel. The seeds of the plants floating in the wind, the small bit of moisture from a fog to the north, and the bugs blown against my skin. The fallen leaves and twigs under me were being crushed beneath my weight. I could feel the slow yet obvious cracking of them. It made me sad, but it also brought wonder into my mind about their lives. I was touching the forest and it was touching me.
The forest, at first glance, seemed simple and boring, but it over took my thoughts through smell, sight, touch, and sound. It controlled my thoughts and feelings. I became calm, relaxed, and peaceful, but at the same time, I felt awe. Just thinking about the staggering way everything there worked together to make something simple; nature. Everything in that wooded area was nature and it was overwhelming how basic yet complex and radiant what this nature was.
I got up from that fallen log changed, thinking, and amazed. The forest was an absolutely beautiful nothingness, but full of mystery at the same time. By going on this simple camping trip I was enlightened and far more thankful of nature.
